The flagship Classroom to Careers programme has surpassed the halfway point of its ambitious three-year goal, marking a pivotal milestone for London Luton Airport education programme initiatives. By the second year of delivery, 1,200 participants had already signed up for the programme, which was intended to reach 2,000 local students and youth. London Luton Airport’s long-term community strategy has made local youth skills development a priority through consistent cooperation and planned planning.
The programme has been positioned as a practical response to the need for meaningful career exposure among young people in Luton. By embedding real-world learning into school and community settings, opportunities have been expanded for students to gain insight into employment pathways that exist both within aviation and beyond. A steady increase in participation has demonstrated growing awareness and trust among local schools, families and community organisations.
Collaborative delivery rooted in the local community
The Classroom to Careers programme has been delivered by the London Luton Airport community team, working in close partnership with airport volunteers and Luton Council’s Children, Families and Education team. This collaborative approach has ensured that workshops and learning activities are aligned with local educational priorities while remaining relevant to the evolving employment landscape.

During 2025, the programme has been strengthened through the involvement of more than 30 London Luton Airport volunteers. Their contribution has played a central role in enabling the programme to reach scale within a relatively short timeframe. With volunteer-led workshops and mentoring support, the programme has continued to expand its reach across Luton.
In just its second year, engagement with 1,200 local young people has been achieved, reflecting both strong organisational commitment and sustained volunteer enthusiasm. This level of participation has reinforced the programme’s position as a cornerstone of London Luton Airport’s community engagement efforts. By maintaining a people-focused delivery model, learning experiences have been shaped around real career journeys and lived workplace experience.
Supporting progression into employment
At its core, the Classroom to Careers programme has been designed to support students’ progression into employment. This objective has been closely aligned with Luton Council’s 2040 vision, which aims to build a healthy and fair town where everyone can thrive. Through targeted skills development and early exposure to career pathways, barriers to employment have been addressed before they become entrenched.
As one of the largest employers in the region, London Luton Airport has been positioned as a gateway to a wide range of careers. Opportunities have been highlighted across operational, technical, commercial and professional functions, demonstrating that aviation-related employment extends far beyond front-line roles. More than half of current airport passholders have been identified as residing within the LU1 to LU4 postcode area, reinforcing the airport’s role as a local employer deeply embedded within the community.
Investment boosting local skills initiatives
Additional momentum has been provided through targeted financial support. During the previous year, London Luton Airport’s commitment to local skills development and education initiatives was strengthened by a £90,000 grant from the Reach for the Skies Challenge Fund. This fund has been jointly delivered by the Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority, with a specific focus on supporting community volunteering projects.
The fund has been introduced to inspire and create opportunities for individuals who are currently underrepresented in the aviation sector. Through this support, programmes such as Classroom to Careers have been enabled to expand their scope and deepen their impact. Funding has been used to enhance workshop delivery, develop partnerships and ensure that opportunities remain inclusive and accessible.
Key highlights from 2025 activities
A range of activities delivered during 2025 has illustrated the breadth of the Classroom to Careers programme. Eleven skills workshops have been hosted by London Luton Airport volunteers and delivered to more than 200 secondary school pupils across Luton. These sessions have focused on employability skills, workplace awareness and career exploration.
Environmental education has also been embedded through a partnership with The Forest of Marston Vale. An environmental programme has been delivered to 180 pupils from three Luton primary schools, offering access to outdoor learning while enhancing understanding of biodiversity and nature. This initiative has broadened the programme’s scope beyond aviation, reinforcing sustainability awareness from an early age.
A revamp of London Luton Airport’s apprenticeship programme has resulted in six local young people being recruited into Guest Experience, Health and Safety, Sustainability, Digital Marketing and Commercial apprenticeship roles. These opportunities have provided structured entry points into long-term employment, combining practical experience with formal training.
Further support has been delivered by volunteers from the London Luton Airport security team, who have assisted almost 100 people participating in a six-month street works employment training programme. This initiative has been developed to help local people access traffic management and infrastructure employment opportunities in Luton and the wider Bedfordshire region.
Work experience placements have been offered across the airport, allowing participants to gain firsthand exposure to operational environments. Additional activities have stemmed from London Luton Airport’s charity partnership with the National Literacy Trust and participation in Green Careers Week, further diversifying the learning experiences available to young people.
Leadership commitment to long-term impact
Strategic commitment from senior leadership has underpinned the continued growth of the programme. It has been emphasised that sustained investment in structured skills, training and career development initiatives remains a priority for London Luton Airport. Through Classroom to Careers, local young people have been introduced to the full breadth of career opportunities available at the airport, spanning Operations, Finance and IT, as well as HR, Marketing and Commercial functions.
Positive outcomes have been observed across workshops, apprenticeships, work experience placements and university partnerships linked to the programme. These results have reinforced the value of a coordinated approach that integrates education, community engagement and workforce planning.
London Luton Airport’s wider role and achievements
London Luton Airport has continued to operate as one of the UK’s busiest airports, under the management of a consortium led by AENA and InfraBridge. A diverse range of airlines, including Jet2, easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al, has contributed to the airport’s connectivity and economic significance.
Ownership for community benefit has been retained through Luton Rising, a company wholly owned by Luton Council. Since 1998, more than £500m has been invested by Luton Rising into front-line, voluntary and charitable services, reinforcing the airport’s social impact.
Connectivity has been enhanced through the Luton Airport Express, enabling travel from central London to the terminal in around 30 minutes via St Pancras International and Luton Airport Parkway, with seamless connection to the DART system.
Recognition has been received at a European level, with London Luton Airport named European Airport of the Year in 2024 by ACI EUROPE and awarded the highest rating of Very Good in the 2025 CAA Airport Accessibility report. Sustainability leadership has also been demonstrated through achievement of Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation and consistent top-tier performance in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.
A lasting contribution to Luton’s future
London Luton Airport has remained a major employer and economic driver in Bedfordshire, supporting 28,000 jobs and contributing £830 million annually to the local economy. Through initiatives such as Classroom to Careers, long-term value has been created not only for the aviation sector but for the wider community.
